... The more miles the oil is run for, the more acidic it gets. People change the oil before storage mainly due to the fact that acidic oil can allegedly break down/degrade your rod/main bearings slightly while sitting all winter. However, again, there can be arguments for and against this occurrence - As depending on what oil you use, some has additives, and detergents to prevent/slow this 'acidic' accumulation. In some oil that has a lot of detergent, it might not be as big of an issue/concern. As for me, I run Shell Rotella T6 synthetic (yes, diesel oil), which has a lot of detergent content, yet is still very stable and resistant to viscosity breakdown, shown in many oil analisis (plus the zinc content helps a lot with internals, for you test-pipe users!). Anyways, when it comes down to it, as common sense would indicate, preventative maintenance is never a bad thing.
